A couple in Washington, D.C., who had recently become empty nesters didn’t view downsizing their home as just a way to cut back on space and upkeep, but rather as an opportunity to change their lifestyle. After raising their children in a traditional-style house with a large family kitchen, they were ready for something a little sleeker and more modern and chic. They wanted a signature space that would be ideal for hosting frequent cocktail and dinner parties with friends.

To design the kitchen of their dreams in their newly built contemporary house, the couple reached out to designer Sarah Kahn Turner, who worked with them to select all the materials, features and finishes. With an emphasis on clean lines, hidden appliances and custom details, the kitchen nails the homeowners’ one big request to make sure it looked “like it came straight out of a design magazine.”

While the kitchen features a black-and-white color palette with lots of brass touches, the red midcentury-style office chairs in the breakfast area add a splash of bold color. The flooring is white oak with a light gray wash. To highlight the space’s clean lines, none of the kitchen windows has a curtain or shade. The face-level panes of the windows over the sink are frosted to add privacy from next-door neighbors.
