Apps on smartphones for smart security

Smart Apps

When you're on holidays, you want your house to look occupied. It's easy when you have apps on your smartphone and devices in your home that respond to the app on your smartphone.

LED light bulbs are available that allow you to turn lights on in your house from anywhere in the world. This can be a great way to prevent break-ins because you can turn on bedroom lights, bathroom lights and other lights in the house and potential burglars will think someone is at home.

Apps for Home

You can also purchase curtain openers you can use with a smartphone. Open the curtains during the day and close them at night and you will have even further security in your home. Burglars often look at potential break-in spots in advance and when they see your curtains are open during the day, but closed at night, they will think twice about going to your house.

You will have to download the apps for your smartphone. Some are included with smart LED lights and curtains, but you can also purchase apps that will make using your smartphone easier. They can integrate all your devices and make using an app much easier. Some come at a cost, but they make using home security apps much easier.

Devices you can use for smart security

Aside from apps, there are many devices you can use for home security. They come at a cost, but will increase home smart security:

CleverLoop is an example of a camera that can be used indoors or outdoors to monitor security. It is "smart"  because it monitors your home, but it learns what is normal and what is not normal, so it only alerts you when something unusual happens. You can buy indoor and outdoor cameras and keep an eye on whatever is happening in your home.

CCTV Camera

Motion sensors are a great idea for indoors or outdoors. A motion sensor can also be linked to outdoor lighting and when a motion is detected, an outdoor light will go on. Thieves like to hide in the shadows and motion sensors at the sides of your house combined with outdoor lighting will frighten them away. Some motion sensors have twin viewers, which can sense motion in two directions. Some can detect motion from 12 metres away and can stop a thief before they get into the shadows of the side of the house.

Smart sensors take other forms, too. For example:

  • A sensor can activate an alarm or siren

  • Some sensors can detect when a door, garage door or window is opening and can alert you. It will allow you to call the police and possibly prevent a break in.

  • Some sensors can monitor motion, temperature, vibration and even UV light

  • Sensors can also detect smoke and alert you to its presence

CO Detector

Home sirens are also available. They can work in two ways. The siren will automatically start when an intruder is in the home. The siren can be turned off when needed, but when it is needed, it can be turned on and a motion detector will activate the siren. This can be a good way to deter thieves, because the siren will make them run.

Surveillance Camera

Sensors are "smart"  because they can detect almost anything, from motion detectors to monitoring doors or windows and smoke. They can be one of the best smart security purchases you can make and only cost* between $50 and $130 depending on the features the sensor has.

What are some of the smartest home security devices?

When you're looking for a smart home security device, you need to know how smart it is. Many companies offer packages for home security.

  • Nest Secure offers starter packs or greater security features. Some of the smart security devices Nest Secure offers include thermostats, cameras, a doorbell, an alarm system, locks and  a smoke detector. You may not need the thermostat for home security, but it would be nice to have it when you want to come home to a warm house. It has a monthly fee of $32.00.

  • Abode is another security system. It includes a starter kit or a fully featured home security system. It includes a motion sensor, door/window sensor and a remote key fob. It also can connect to your lights, locks and garage door opener. The monthly fee is $13.00.

  • ADT Pulse requires professional installation and  has an installation cost of $49.00 with a monthly fee of $38.00. It coonects to a smartphone app and includes a security camera; remote arm and disarm; a live video feed; and home automation control.

These are just a few of many smart security systems that are available. Many others may have features you need for home security and you may want to factor in the monthly fee without sacrificing home security.

Do you need full home automation?

Security is a top priority, but full home automation systems exist that also have security features. Home automation systems come at a price because you may need to purchase items that go with the home automation system such as door and window locks, a thermostat and other features.

Full home automation can be expensive, but it can make life more convenient and help with home security, too. You can start slowly, buying smart lights for a start and then adding to the system. On average, home automation costs* around $1000, but can cost as much as $3500.

Full home automation will include smart security features, but will also allow you to adjust your thermostat or air conditioning. If you have home automation door and window locks installed, you can check whether the doors and windows are locked. If they are not, you can lock them remotely. While the convenience of having a warm or cool house to come home to is important, having full home security is also important. This can include smart sensors, outdoor lights that turn on when motion is detected and indoor lights you can turn on and off remotely. As mentioned above, being able to turn the lights on and off will make it appear like someone is at home and can increase home security.

Whether you need full home automation or just some smart security features is your choice. Motion detectors and outside lights that respond to motion detectors can be a great start, but smart LED lighting is inexpensive and easy to use with an app. Curtain openers are more expensive, but can help make the home look lived in and you may even decide to buy a smart TV you can turn on and off remotely. Look into smart security and you will find many products you can use to make your home safer. Some don't cost much and you can always add to your smart security system as your budget allows. There is no reason to go without smart security and it will make your home feel safer.
